Open Dental
Open Dental needs no plugin, no API key, and no change to your Open Dental setup. PerioMaxer Desktop types values into the open perio chart the same way a person at the keyboard would, and reads the chart from the screen to verify each value landed.
Setup
- Install and activate PerioMaxer Desktop on the operatory computer. See the setup guide.
- Choose Open Dental as your practice software.
- Open a sample patient’s perio chart in Open Dental and start calibration from the PerioMaxer window. In about two minutes it maps the chart grid and detects your practice’s charting order on its own. This runs once per computer.
Charting
- Open the patient’s perio chart in Open Dental.
- Scan the code on the computer with the PerioMaxer app, or use the computer’s microphone.
- Speak. Values appear in Open Dental as the clinician talks.
Versions
Verified means the write path was exercised on a real install of that version, every value typed, read back on screen, and rolled back.

Expected to work from 24.4 (March 2025), an estimate from the vendor’s own release notes: 24.4 added the Attached Gingiva row and the Gingival Margin wording option, the last change to the perio grid's rows; 25.4 changed only how the Direction buttons behave. Versions back to 23.3 (March 2024) will likely work but have not been tested: 23.3 is the first version whose manual documents the Maxillary First / Facials First advance sequence PerioMaxer calibrates against.
On an older version, the free first week is the test: chart a sample patient and watch the values land.
Vendors ship a new version most months. When one changes the perio chart, allow about a week for us to confirm it; PerioMaxer verifies every value on screen, so an unrecognised layout is refused rather than typed blind.
If your charting order changes
The desktop calibrates against the charting order it found at install. If your office changes that setting in Open Dental, run calibration again from the PerioMaxer window, or tap Recalibrate in the phone app’s settings while connected.
